Nature’s Hands on "The Earth, Our Mother"

Billy Gauthier’s The Earth, Our Mother, a breathtaking sculpture carved from a massive fin whale skull, was shaped not only by the artist’s hands but also by decades of exposure to the natural world. Long before becoming a masterpiece, it lay weathering on a beach, transformed by time and the forces of nature.

Join Dr. Janna Andronowski, Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Memorial University, as she explores how weather, environment, and the passage of time contributed to its unique textures and forms. She will reveal the natural markings that inspired Gauthier’s artistic vision, along with the hidden ecosystem that once lived within the skull—an ecosystem that also posed challenges for conservation and curation.

Through this captivating look at the intersection of art, science, and the natural world, Dr. Andronowski reveals the stories shaped by nature’s hands and highlights the remarkable processes that influenced this extraordinary work.”
