10th Province: Modernizing the 1950s and 1960s

The two decades that followed Newfoundland and Labrador’s Confederation with Canada were marked by modernization efforts, federal supports, and building projects that brought unprecedented changes to the province.

These rapid changes prompted new reflections on our history and identities. What did it mean to be Newfoundlanders and Labradorians within Canada? How were we distinct from the country we had just joined?

Objects and images from this time offer a nostalgic look back at this period of cultural change.
