A Closer Look (Grade 7-12)

How does an artist’s experiences and perception of the world influence their visual expression?

Students learn about Billy Gauthier's The Earth, Our Mother – a piece in which animal life, landscapes, and faces emerge, telling a multi-part story that holds considerable meaning. The work reflects Gauthier’s relationship to his ancestors, the land, his Inuk heritage, and carries the artist’s appeal for responsible stewardship of the planet for future generations. Students participate in an inquiry-based tour of the Level 4 art exhibition and an interactive art activity.
